The Client

Shadow and Spice Book Box Canada is real company offering a wide range of subscription boxes for readers of horror, dark fantasy, and dark romance. They offer a full-sized quarterly subscription box for each genre that comes with three paperbacks, often with an exclusive cover or signed bookplate from the author. They also include countless add-ons, or ‘swag,’ made by small Canadian businesses, such as chocolate, coffee, and candles.

The Challenge

For this spec, I chose to write a product description for the March 2023 dark fantasy box. I wanted to infuse a feeling of relaxed sophistication to this description that really spoke to the target audience, while also highlighting the special editions and self-care products in this box, and shouting out the small businesses who made them.

The Approach

I started by researching each of the books that came with this box and getting a feel for what customers would be in store for when they sat down to read. I went back through Book Box Canada’s social media presence and found as much as I could about the products and the companies who made them, choosing to focus on three for this spec, as it was hard to get an exact list. I then used those items to help create a mood for this description.
